A vibrant, picturesque island which, in the 16th century, began to flourish through the rise of its lace-making traditions, Burano is truly captivating for its colourful fishermen’s houses that adorn its canals, and famous for its culinary dishes produced with goby fish. Burano even has its own leaning tower, the bell tower of the Church of San Martino. Legend states that the houses here were brightly painted to aid local fisherman returning home in the fog.

2. San Michele: Best for the history of the Venetian islands

Home to an atmospheric cemetery, San Michele is a place of culture and history. The tombs of notables such as Sergei Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky and Ezra Pound lie here. The cemetery was established in 1804, after Napoleon deemed the practice of burying bodies beneath the city to be unhygienic.

3. Sant’Erasmo: Best for a quiet country escape

Perfect for hiring bikes and enjoying the idyllic views, Sant’Erasmo is a quiet island also known as the ‘market garden’ of the Venice lagoon. Here grows the famous violet artichoke, and they supply much local produce for the area. Its rural aspect makes it a restful change from the crowds of Venice.

4. Lido di Venezia: Best for seaside holidays

Lido di Venezia holds the prestigious Venice International Film Festival every summer, attracting celebrities and public alike. With long, sandy beaches and seafront villages such as Malamocco, its Art Nouveau architecture is appealing, and there are many relaxing walks and cycle routes.

Murano’s glass production dates back to 1291, when fears of furnaces as fire-hazards meant glassmakers moved to the island for safety reasons. Glassmaking heritage is the primary highlight, and the stunning, colourful architecture is also worth the trip.
