Holidays in Italy: Latina Province

Tom Alberto Bull reminisces on holidays from his childhood and looks at why Italian families have the tendency to return to the same place every year?

Vacanza dell?estate

A summer holiday

?Growing up as a British Italian I distinctly remember my excitement leading up to the annual family summer in Italy. The scorching heat, warm sea and delicious food seemed an entirely different world to what I was accustomed to in England. As long as these elements were in place and I could mingle with friends I was happy.

?Consequently I fell in love with a hotel on the coast in the Latina province not far from Rome, and I returned to the same establishment for seven consecutive years.

For me it was the highlight of the summer, although I began to sense the d?j? vu felt by my parents as I got older. Not surprising, really, considering the hotel offered the exact same entertainment every year: a duet named Blue Moon who enthusiastically struggled to sing songs in English, a circus show complete with snake to have your photo taken with, and (the icing on the cake) the hotel show on ferragosto in which guests and employees partook in a wide range of performances, often embarrassing themselves in the name of fun. This routine didn?t bother me in the slightest. I knew all of the staff at the family run hotel and had a group of friends who I could rely on being there at the same time as me. Some would have the same room and umbrella booked as previous years and it was simply a case of knocking on the door when I arrived

This preference to follow a routine even when on holiday is a particularly Italian trait. Although it?s true that the younger generation have broadened their horizons, Italian families continue to return to the same holiday home or hotel on a yearly basis. I have a few reasons why I think this happens

Firstly, Italians enjoy feeling confident and comfortable in their surroundings, especially when on holiday. Being familiar with neighbours and restaurants contributes to the sense of security, and being known by others is equally as important. Also the orientation towards children dictates that the priority is to keep them happy ? I am a case in point. Finally, the need to relax strongly outweighs the desire to explore. These are somewhat unlikely tendencies back home but a particularly English phrase encapsulates the mentality: if something ain?t broke, why fix it?
