Montepulciano Wine: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Boscarelli

It brings together a heady mix of chocolate, damsons, spice and bruised cherries.

Boscarelli

Honesty in a wine is such an important trait. To find a wine that encompasses all-and-nothing-else of its terroir is a rare thing indeed, and yet this is precisely what Paola Corradi has achieved with her ‘basic’ Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. All and nothing else… This may be a difficult concept to get your head around, but it boils down to simply getting a wine spot-on as a result of soil type, climate and positioning when applied to a given grape variety.

Enough philosophising – what’s the wine like? It’s immaculate; unfiltered, certainly, but that doesn’t matter one jot – either decant it or be jolly careful when you’re pouring the last glass and you won’t end up with a mouthful of lees. It has pepper, spice and opulent blackberries on the nose; it brings together a heady mix of chocolate, damsons, spice and bruised cherries on the tongue and it finishes with a drawn-out, cigar smoke precision. It is what Vino Nobile should all be about, and yet it costs a generous £17.00 (€22.00) per bottle. It sounds like a lot but in this case it’s a steal. If you can afford it, buy lots and stick some of it in your cellar. Then invite me around to share it with you, please.
