The Three Peaks – Tre Cime – of Lavaredo are one of the most recognizable symbols of the Italian Dolomites. They stand on what is today the border between the Italian provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno, but until 1919 this was part of the border between Austria and Italy, and it is still a linguistic border between the German-speaking Tyrolean people to the north and the Italophones of Belluno to the south. La Cima Grande, the one in the middle, reaches 3,000 metres above see level – that’s nearly 10,000 feet, more than twice the height of Ben Nevis. It can be climbed, but hiking is the sport of choice here, with many tourists taking the route along the border from Monte Paterno, via Auronzo and Locatelli, to reach the peaks.
