Set between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, the Puglian landscape is a diverse one, with craggy promontories, gently contoured, vine-clad hills, swathes of ancient olive groves, ancient villages and, above all, the coastline. You’re never far from the sea here, and while there are tourist hotspots like the baroque city of Lecce and the curious trulli of Alberobello, much of the coastline is a low-key affair with quiet coves and beaches where the locals go.

And it is the coast near Savelletri, on the Adriatic side, that you’ll find Borgo Egnazia nestling in the ancient olive groves of the Itria valley. A vision in dazzling, creamy stone under a huge arc of blue sky, it’s definitely a place in which to relax and breathe deep.

Time to lose yourself
Looking every inch a traditional Puglian borgo, with narrow terraced houses (casette) and apartments threaded along a maze of tiny cobbled streets and with a vast piazza-cum-village square at its heart, you have the sense that this place has been here for a long time. But not so, as it was built in 2010 with a €150m investment by local architect Pino Brescia, who took his inspiration from the layout of traditional Puglian villages.

The rather impressive main building is La Corte, where you’ll be greeted by your very own smiling guide, ready to lead you through the borgo’s streets and get you settled into your comfortable casetta, villa or apartment. Forget something? Text them via WhatsApp – and problem solved.

The village is also dotted with private villas (with pools) and La Frasca restaurant and Mia Cucina trattoria (for cooking classes), as well as the Trullalleri Kids Club and Fichi d’India Teens Club, a boon to the many families who stay, especially in the summer. The rustic flagstone piazza comes alive with markets, live music and other outdoor events through the year.

It’s also worth noting that Borgo Egnazia is open even in the winter months, as the climate here is so mild, so if you’re not a fan of the searing summer heat (or you don’t have children), you can come for a stay at any time and everything will be up and running.

Make it your own
Do everything or nothing at all – whatever you want from your time here, Borgo Egnazia can make it happen – or simply soak up the timeless ambience and feel your stresses ebb away.
